Established in 1983, the Shanghai Minhang Economic & Technological Development Zone ("Minhang Development Zone" for short) was among the first 14 state-level development zones in China designated by the State Council in 1986. Located in the southwest part of Minhang District, Shanghai, the Minhang Development Zone covers 3.5km2. In 1985, the Shanghai Minhang United Development Co., Ltd. ("Minhang Company" for short) was established. Run as an enterprise, the Company is responsible for the development, construction and management of the Minhang Development Zone.
Under the concern and instruction from the Central and Municipal Party Committee as well as the municipal government, the Minhang Development Zone has made remarkable achievements in attracting foreign capital, absorbing advanced technology, serving as a window to the outside world, making economic influence on peripheral areas and providing job opportunities. Topping the list among other development zones in six major economic indices, the Minhang Development Zone has set a successful example of mature development zones in China.
