Kunshan Economic & Technological Development Zone (KETD) was founded in 1985,and was upgraded by the State Council to a national development zone in August 1992. Parks in the zone include Jiangsu Kunshan Export Processing Zone, China Kunshan Business Incubator for Overseas Chinese Scholars, Jiangsu International Business Center, and Kunshan Industrial Park for Japanese Companies. By the end of September 2002, more than 900 companies have been set up with investments from 38 countries and regions across the world, mainly in the business of IT industry and the production of precision machinery and daily-life stuff. Being ISO 14001 certified, the super investment environment has turned KETD into one of the most promising land for investors from home and abroad.
KETD is located to the east of Kunshan City proper, covering a planned area of 7,700 hectares, with a built-up area of 3,000 hectares shaping one center with two flanks. By the end of September 2002, an area of 5,500 hectares has been developed and 2,000 hectares are open to projects to invest in. Since 1985 KETD has put in over 4 billion RMB in infrastructure, including 75 bridges, 149 km of highways, totaling 2,380 m2 in area, and a centralized heat and steam supply system covering 98% of the zone.
