Norway's economic relations with China began approximately one hundred and fifty
years ago, when the first Norwegian ship called on the port in Shanghai. Several
Norwegians had for many years joined Danish journeys to China, and got inspired
by their commercial objectives.
For very long, economic and political ties between Norway and China developed quite
erratically and relatively slow, although Norway had various informal representations
in China since 1851. Establishment of official diplomatic relations was completed
on 5th of October 1954. The two countries decided to exchange ambassadors in 1955,
and relations hereafter entered a new and more dynamic phase.
Since establishment of formal relations between the two countries, the bilateral
economic cooperation has developed from simple exchanges of commodities to multi-field
cooperation in economy, trade, industry and technology. The bilateral trade between
China and Norway has increased constantly since mid-1980s and has resulted in China
now being Norway's most important trading partner in Asia.
