Danish shipping titan A. P. Moeller-Maersk may be on the verge of doubling the number of company ships registered in Hong Kong, bringing up the total to 14, according to U.S. financial news outlet Bloomberg. The speculated reason for the massive future increase in Maersk vessels sailing under a Hong Kong flag is the Chinese special autonomous region's favourable tax laws.
According to the Danish shipping company's chief officer in Hong Kong, Halfdan Ross, Maersk "is indeed looking at an increase this year." Mr. Ross explained to a Bloomberg reporter that Hong Kong's efforts to establish itself as a major rival to nearby shipping hub Singapore has resulted in more competitive tax levels and docking fees than any found in Europe.
