As the plans for a proposed "University of Denmark" in China continues to progress, it becomes ever clearer that at least the initial focus of the Sino-Danish academic collaboration will be on biotechnological and biomedical studies.
"We are going to have to accept that some fields are more important to the Chinese than others," says Jens Oddershede, head of the University of Southern Denmark and spokesman for Universities Denmark. "And there's no doubt that the biomedical and biotechnological fields are where their interests lie. That's why it's probably most likely that we'll start out with courses in biotech and perhaps a few other technical areas. But at the same time we, the Danish side of the partnership, will also continue to push for courses in language and culture from the get-go."
A university that will deliver Danish-standard university degrees in China is the brainchild of the Danish government in collaboration with Chinese authorities and several larger Danish companies with substantial operations in the Middle Kingdom. The university campus is likely to be placed in Beijing, and Danish companies will be asked to sponsor at least some part of the budget in exchange for relevant R&D projects to be carried out by the university's staff and the BA-, master- and Ph.D- level students attending the future academic centre.
