As part of the ongoing Paralympic Games in Beijing, President Hu Jintao of China is busy meeting up with a good part of the 16 heads of state and government currently visiting the Chinese capital. Yesterday, it was Germany's turn. The Federal Republic's president Horst Koehler met up with his Chinese counterpart for talks on how to improve Sino-German relations after the grapes recently turned a little sour following German chancellor Angela Merkel's meeting with the Dalai Lama.
The meeting took place in spite of strong Chinese protests and sparked somewhat of an anti-Chinese sentiment among members of the German press. But high-level diplomacy, however tentative, seems to have set in with some effect. After the meeting President Hu announced that: "Sino-German ties have developed soundly thanks to the concerted efforts of the two sides". President Koehler chipped in with a comment on how he hoped that Germany and China would strengthen their mutual dialogue and share experiences.
What happens now remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: German industry, which has invested billions of Euros in the Middle Kingdom, is waiting with baited breath.
